Removable partial dentures (also known as “partials”) are removable prosthetic devices used to replace missing teeth when some natural teeth still remain. Partials not only replace missing teeth but they can also replace surrounding tissue that supports the face and smile. Partials are frequently made out of acrylic or cast metal and acrylic. Removable partial dentures are not destructive. However they tend to attract a lot of plaque to the natural teeth and that can be very destructive. It is recommended that patients do not sleep with their partials in place. The following is recommended for patients that wear removable partial dentures: do not wear them when sleeping, never drop them, and take them out when doing your daily oral hygiene.
As with all dental restorations; removable partial dentures are not permanent and may someday need replacement. They are very durable, and have the potential to last many years. Excellent oral hygiene practices (including daily effective tooth brushing and flossing), eating habits (including decreased sweets), and regular dental visits will positively affect the longevity of your fixed bridge.
